With over 30 million golfers in the United States alone, this is one sport that has not suffered too badly during a soft economy. What most people do not know is that only 10% of the people who play golf ever break 100 as their best score! If you play, you know that 100 is not a very competitive score. The challenge lies in one area and that is being able to repeat a good swing. This will show you how to improve golf swing consistency. What makes golf a unique sport is that you are only competing with yourself. It doesn’t matter how well your competitors play, it only matters how you play. If you develop consistency in your swing, you will not only improve, the game will be much more enjoyable even if you do not play competitively.
Golf is about balance and comfort. The better you feel when you are addressing your shot the better you will likely hit it. If you watch other players, you’ll see that the best ones have great balance. This is not difficult to achieve. It just takes some practice and good fundamentals. Even if you are not overly athletic, everyone can work on their balance. It’s as simple as keeping your balance to walk!
For a solid golf swing and more consistency, you need to be in a comfortable and athletic position. This occurs when you are addressing your shot and this is the easy part. Your stance should start with your feet about shoulders width apart. This will give you a foundation to build from. While bending your knees a little and leaning into the swing, it will achieve an athletic stance. This also allows the bigger muscles in your legs and back to help with the swing.
Once you feel comfortable in this position, you will immediately have more confidence when approaching a shot. Simply stated, your weight should be focused on the inside of both of your feet as that will give some stability. You will want to feel as if your feet are firmly planted on the ground and that you have strength in your lower body. The larger muscles in your legs and back are the most important in a golf swing.
Your stance is how you get into balance. With your feet spread about at shoulders width, you are in a good starting position. Then with a slight bend of the knees and a little lean forward while focusing on your weight being towards the inner sides of your feet, you have attained an athletic position. A good position at address will also allow your larger muscles to play their correct part in your golf swing. Most consistency comes from comfort, so work on feeling comfortable as you approach the ball. In fact, to work on your balance, you don’t even have to be playing or practicing. Just practice getting into a comfortable athletic position as you walk around your house or yard. It may look silly, but who cares?
Next up is your grip. Holding the golf club the same way with the same grip and pressure helps you feel as if the club is just an extension of your arms and hands. So whichever grip you choose, remember how it feels and do it the same way with every shot, other than your putter, of course. You can accomplish this feel by just walking around the house holding a club. Remember we are developing simple ways to get a new comfort zone and repetition is the key. Spend time on this while working on your balance and comfort.
At the range, you will start getting to hit balls. The position of the ball is crucial. For tee shots, your ball should be placed towards the front foot instep. This will allow for a complete follow through as the swing does not finish at the bottom! You must complete your swing to get 2 things. It will give you better control and more distance. But it still takes confidence.
All of these ideas will definitely help you get the most of your talents. However, even the best players in the world still work with a Professional, so take some lessons. If for nothing else to confirm that you are doing as many things correctly as you can. But remember that your swing can be grooved by repeating good set up and grip. You will see more shots in the fairway and on the green if your balance and grip are duplicated on each swing.
So avoid this by being intentional about your twist. they are constantly practicing shots they expect to see on the course. Obviously, the well oiled hinges will allow the door swing open and closed faster.
